Cafe Review: Coffee Hanyakbang

Located in a tight alleyway in Euljiro 3-ga is Coffee Hanyakbang (커피한약방) . While I have several favorite cafes in Korea, this might be one of the top 3.

It is located in the former Hyeminseo (혜민서), the main medicine “office” of the Joseon Dynasty. Beloved and well-respected royal physician and writer, Heo Jun (허준), often treated patients here in the 16th century, and he is also known for his Donguibogam (동의보감), or “Principles and Practice of Eastern Medicine,” which detailed natural remedies for common illnesses using simple herbs that commoners could easily find. It was also written in Hangeul rather than Hanja, which meant it was more accessible to less classically-educated people as well.

Hanyakbang (한약방) translates to “Korean medicine room.” A lot of artifacts can be found here from the 1920s and 40s, including old medicine bags and telephones, as well as antique medicine cabinets repurposed into a self-serve water and condiment station.

They manually roast their coffee beans, ensuring that you get the freshest cup, every time. If you’re not into pour-overs, their espresso is also top-notch, and their milk-based espresso drinks are also amazing. You can buy beans as well as drip-bags.

One of the most striking parts of the cafe is the lacquered mother-of-pearl inlay in the main counters. Though the entire place has a vintage feel, it permeates down to the countertops and bronze-colored pour-over drippers.

The bakery Hyemindang (혜민당), across the alleyway, which offers additional seating as well, sells delicious pastries that pair well with the coffee.

A closer look at the coffee menu…

Coffee Hanyakbang may be one of the most unique cafes in the world, not only because of its location, but also the quality of service and coffee itself. It’s a not-to-be-missed cafe for all cafe lovers who find themselves in Seoul.

I love introducing my friends to this café. Was just there on Friday with another one and she was amazed.

[…] This is the smaller, much less crowded Coffee Hanyakbang, located in Euljiro 3-ga. […]
