수능 Suneung, the College Scholastic Ability Test

At 1 o’clock this afternoon, the skies of South Korea were silent. All planes were prohibited from either taking off or landing for an hour while (senior) high school students were taking the English listening test of the suneung, or College Scholastic Ability Test. Imagine the SAT or ACT, but with added weight and 3 times as long. It’s an all-day affair that takes place every November.

You can read an article explained by a Suneung test-taker here. It covers how the exam is set up, as well as what foods test-takers will avoid (yes) and how hard-core the security surrounding the test is.

For those of you who took the test, today, you did well. Fighting!
