Rereading Goosebumps–Halfway There! Thirty One/Sixty Two

I am now halfway through the original 62 Goosebumps books!

  • A Night in Terror Tower (#27)
  • The Scarecrow Walks at Midnight (#20)
  • It Came From Beneath the Sink! (#30)
  • Phantom of the Auditorium (#24)
  • Go Eat Worms! (#21)
  • Return of the Mummy (#23)
  • Werewolf Skin (#60)
  • Calling All Creeps (#50)
  • My Best Friend is Invisible (#57)
  • Say Cheese and Die–Again! (#44)
  • The Horror at Camp Jellyjam (#33)

This particular set of books were all quite interesting in their own rights. Some of them could have easily been tailored for a more adult audience, some had major plot holes, but most of them were really enjoyable reads.

I also encountered my first African-American character, although she wasn’t a main character. It took too damn long, in my opinion, but I don’t know if I can personally fault Stine for that. We also had our second location outside the US, in jolly ol’ England.

My favorite out of this batch was probably Calling All Creeps, because it was really weird and the school setting really came through. It had some major plot holes, however.

Honorable mention to The Horror at Camp Jellyjam, due to the fact that I’m currently writing a review on The New Seoul Park Jelly Massacre, another jelly-focused horror tale.

As I read, sometimes I can envision a still image that I believe was probably from the Goosebumps television series, which I remember watching as a kid, but the images are fuzzy and I’m never sure if I’m remembering an image from the show or I’m just really getting into the story.

I’m hoping to finish all 62 by the end of the year, which is doable, but I’m concerned about getting my hands on a couple of books in particular. I wanted to complete this quest without spending any money, but there are a few books that I haven’t been able to find in my various US libraries.

I’m still reading Moby Dick, we decided on The Disaster Tourist for our September book club so I plan on doing a re-read of that, and I just crossed my goal of 60 books for the year. I’m thinking of pushing it (again) to 80 or even 100 to account for the 62 Goosebumps books.

Back to my reading for the night.
