#4, The Mystery at Lilac Inn
Again, Nancy spends the first chapter in the water after her canoe capsizes. Nancy, I’m glad you know how to swim, but exercise some caution, please. You haven’t even met Ned Nickerson yet!
This 1961 revised edition by Harriet Adams is a far cry from the 1930 original. In that edition, Nancy must hire a temporary housekeeper–and you can imagine the kind of racism that comes along with the territory of hiring “help.” I’m undecided if I want to read the original Nancy Drew books that have been released into the public domain.
