#6, The Secret of Red Gate Farm
This book was a dud for me. Nature cult? Counterfeiters? Arguably one of my least favorite books thus far. George and Bess’ bickering and over-exaggerated personality traits are also kind of annoying in this book. We get it, Bess is a fat scaredy-cat and George is a brave tomboy.
There’s a slur for a Chinese woman in the book, and Bess describes a perfume as making her believe she’s in the “mystic Orient,” whatever that means.
The cover art, featuring the nature cult wearing white robes and hoods and dancing under the moonlight, has been controversial due to the resemblance to KKK robes.
Honorable mention for phrase of the book:
“By the way, where do these nature people get their food?” Nancy queried. “They can’t live on blue sky and inspiration.”
I’ve added another phrase that I thought was really funny for how cliche it is at the end of this post as it could be considered a spoiler.
